Buying Union Experiences

San Diego Parks and Recreation

07/31/2013

A sport I've recently become more interested in is kayaking; so much so that, after renting one on two occasions, I bought a kayak. There are some really great places to go kayaking here in San Diego. One is in La Jolla where you can paddle out by the La Jolla coves and enjoy the sea air. Other great places include the many lakes in and around San Diego County. So far, I've experienced Lake Murray, Lake Hodges and Miramar Lake. Kayak launch fees are $2 for singles and $7 for doubles for use of the lakes alllllll dayyyyyyy. If you so desire, you can purchase fishing a license and add to the experience! Visiting our state parks supports workers in unions such as the International Brotherhood of Teamsters 911 and the American Federal State County and Municipal Employees, Local 127.

A special shout-out goes to the United Automobile, Aerospace and Agricultural Implement Workers of America (UAW) for making my Milwaukee's Best.

Ford

06/28/2013

I just purchased my new, Ford F-150! Prior to buying, I researched and researched and researched...then, I did some more research. I visited several vehicle purchasing sites including cars.com, carsdirect.com, kbb.com and Ford.com. All of these sites were useful in helping me to locate the exact Ford vehicle I was searching for and determining a purchasing price range. The "TrueCar Car Buying Service" offered through Union Plus was the most instrumental site in providing me with a great price on a great vehicle. Regrettably I was unable to complete the purchase via the Union Plus program because none of the participating dealers had the exact vehicle I was interested in purchasing, the buying service did provide me with a great purchasing price which was eventually matched by Drew Ford in La Mesa, California. Thanks to Rick Garrett (the awesome vehicle salesman at Drew Ford) and the Union Plus Car Buying Service, I now have a great vehicle that was made by Members of the United Automobile, Aerospace and Agricultural Implement Workers of America (UAW), Local 249 at a great price!

Lake Poway

05/19/2013

Lake Poway is the crown jewel of the City of Poway's many recreational areas available for we 'Powegians' and non-Poway residents to enjoy. There are miles of trails for endless hiking/biking/horseback riding opportunities, a softball field, kid's play areas, boat rentals, a snack shop fishing, BBQ areas...

As with many Federal, State, County and Municipal public areas, the recreational grounds in Poway area maintained by unionized workers. Thank You International Brotherhood of Teamsters Local 911 Members!

AllAmericanClothing.com

05/09/2013

Ok, ok so I've been slacking on posting my union shopping stories for awhile (rest assured I have continued to enjoy many union made services and products and this posting is about one such experience)! Tonight I made my second trip to All American Clothing. The jeans and t-shirts I picked up the last time I shopped there are holding up great but I decided it's time to add to my wardrobe! Everything they sell is made in America and many items are made by members of UFCW, Local 1099 (now local 75).

p.s. Remember, EVERYONE is always welcome to submit their own union related shopping or service story here!

Like before, they're still offering these two deals...

San Diego Padres

06/30/2012

Are the Padres in last place? Yep (currently 28 and 50); but that doesn't mean we can't have a good time rooting for them at Petco Park! Besides, their standings probably contribute to their low ticket prices. I actually prefer the less crowded seats in the upper deck. It was definitely an enjoyable day at the ballpark during my recent visit. If you would have run into me, you'd have found me with a Budweiser (made by members of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters) in one hand and a Padre Dog in the other, each handed to me by members of Unite Here who work the concession stands. So, the next time you're looking for somewhere to go and the Padres are in town, why not get out to the ball park? You'll be supporting members of numerous labor unions.

Service Employees International Union (SEIU) members sell tickets at the box office and clean the park, International Brotherhood of Teamster (IBT) members make the beer, Unite Here members serve the food and drinks, the umpires are represented by the World Umpires Association and of course the players are represented by the Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPA).

And, if you'd like to escape some of the traffic on your way to/leaving the game, you could take advantage of the MTS trolley or buses which are operated by members of the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU). Security on the trolley is provided by members of the Security, Police and Fire Professionals of America (SPFPA).
